2009 : Lancement de la Fédération Nationale de Recherche sur le Genre (RING)

« La Fédération de recherche sur le genre (Fédération RING), constituée sur les conseils du Ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche, reconnue par ses instances (note de février 2009) fait suite au Réseau Interuniversitaire et Interdisciplinaire National sur le Genre. Le RING a été créé comme PPF en 2001 à l’initiative d’un collectif d’enseignantes-chercheuses de différentes équipes et universités, en particulier Paris Diderot (CEDREF, organisateur initial du projet) ; Paris 8, Toulouse Le Mirail, Lumière Lyon 2, en association avec le GERS (UMR, aujourd’hui CRESPA). Depuis sa fondation, nombre de d’enseignant.e.s chercheurs/chercheuses et de collectifs appartenant à différentes équipes ont rejoint le RING (Université de Bretagne occidentale, Université de Tours, Paris Dauphine, Paris Ouest, Paris I, Université de Provence, Université de Lille 3, Archives du féminisme, Mnémosyne…). Enfin le RING travaille en relation étroite avec une association de jeunes chercheuses et chercheurs en études féministes, genre et sexualités, EFiGiES.
Ces équipes partagent une même problématique scientifique qui implique la reconnaissance du caractère sexué de l’organisation des sociétés humaines et la prise en compte la construction sociale et symbolique des catégories de sexes et des rapports entre les sexes. L’étude des rapports de genre traverse tous les domaines, des pratiques politiques aux représentations sociales, de la formation des disciplines à leur institutionnalisation. Elle exige une approche pluridisciplinaire.
La Fédération RING a pour objectif la coordination des pôles d’enseignement et des équipes de recherche. Elle accueille aussi des enseignant.e.s et les chercheuses ou chercheurs isolé.e.s. Elle assure la diffusion des études sur le genre au niveau non seulement national, mais européen et international, par la constitution de réseaux. Son activité a pour but d’enrichir les problématiques existantes en favorisant les échanges critiques à l’intérieur de chaque discipline et entre les disciplines. La Fédération poursuit en les élargissant les activités du RING. Elle organise en particulier :
• Des conférences invitant des chercheuses et chercheurs renommés à présenter les travaux menés sur le genre dans différentes disciplines et différents pays.
• Des journées d’études, colloques, séminaires, permettant d’assurer la transmission des acquis de la recherche féministe, dans le respect d’un haut niveau d’exigence scientifique (Parmi les prochains thèmes envisagés : genre et colonialisme, genre et sciences…).
• Des rencontres européennes régulières, en France et hors de France, afin de pérenniser un réseau de chercheuses avec lesquelles les enseignantes chercheuses de la Fédération travaillent.
• Un programme de publications, essais individuels et travaux collectifs issus des recherches et pratiques en cours, et un soutien à des traductions d’ouvrages étrangers importants, ainsi que l’élaboration de manuels à destinations de l’enseignement secondaire.
• La circulation de l’information et les relations au sein du réseau par :
– un annuaire
– une lettre d’informations
– un site (http://www.univ-paris8.fr/RING/).
• En collaboration avec le CNRS, la Fédération RING a contribué à l’élaboration d’un questionnaire exhaustif visant à connaître l’état de la recherche sur le genre en France. L’enquête établie sous l’égide du CNRS sera conduite, dans les universités, sous la responsabilité de la Fédération qui participera au colloque programmé le 8 mars 2010 au siège du CNRS.
Trois établissements sont aujourd’hui en charge de la coordination des activités de la Fédération RING : l’Université Paris 8, rattachement principal, l’Université Lumière Lyon 2 et l’Université Paris Diderot, rattachements secondaires Entre les établissements parties prenantes de la Fédération, une convention cadre sera signée par chacun des présidents afin de mutualiser les moyens et les compétences des universités concernées. En premier lieu Paris 8, Lumière Lyon 2, Paris Diderot qui pourront être rejoints par les autres universités et établissements de recherches affiliés à la Fédération.

Conference : Narratives of Peace, 1854-1914

The foreign wars of mid-nineteenth to early twentieth-century Britain were accompanied by anti-war protests or calls for peace in various forms. Those who argued against war came from widely differing political and religious positions, from the liberal free-trade stance of Richard Cobden to the revolutionary socialism of William Morris or the feminism of Isabella Ford. This interdisciplinary conference offers the opportunity to examine narratives of peace and the ways in which they were deployed in the period leading up to the First World War. The conference will build on the burgeoning body of scholarly work on peace movements in Britain and Europe, addressing questions of the interaction of ideology and form, content and context in the imagination of peace.
We welcome papers from across the humanities analysing any aspect of the productions and representations of British peace movements in the period between the beginning of the Crimean War and the beginning of the First World War: from political speeches, songs or demonstrations to the stories, poems, essays and images that contributed to anti-war movements. Topics might include:
• Visual representations of peace and war in protest movements
• Discourses of religion in peace campaigns
• The uses of the past in anti-war writing
• Ideas of gender in anti-war campaigns
• Science, war and the end of war
• War as a means to peace
• Peace, war and the body of the citizen
• Literary, visual or organisational form as an expression of pacifist commitment
• Suffragettes and anti-war movements
• Socialism and anti-war movements
• Patriotism and peace movements

The international conference of the Edith Wharton Society in Florence, Italy, celebrating the sesquicentennial of Wharton’s birth. “Edith Wharton in Florence” will be the third Wharton Society conference held in Europe and the first in Italy. The conference directors seek papers focusing on all aspects of Wharton’s work, and we especially welcome submissions dealing with the international contexts of her writing.

« Parce que 2012 célèbre le 5ème centenaire de la mort de Amerigo Vespucci, citoyen florentin qui découvrit l’Amérique, Florence salue les liens qui unissent le vieux et le nouveau continent, au travers d’une exposition dédiée à Sargent et aux Impressionnistes américains. En effet, à la fin du XIXe siècle, Florence et nombre d’autres villes européennes virent affluer des artistes américains en quête de traditions picturales et d’inspiration. Exhibition : « Americans in Florence. Sargent and the American Impressionists »
« In 2012, exactly 500 years since the death of Amerigo Vespucci, Florence will be marking this event with an exhibition designed to celebrate the strong ties linking the Old World and the New, and the cosmopolitan ambiance that bound the city to the New World for ever, transmitting European culture and sophistication to America.
The exhibition explores the American impressionists’ relationship with Italy, and with Florence in particular, in the decades spanning the close of the 19th and dawn of the 20th centuries. There was a marked upswing in the number of American artists travelling to Europe after the Civil War ended in 1865, and the trend continued on into the early 20th century. Hundreds of painters came to Paris and other parts of France while others studied in Germany, with England, Holland and Spain being other favourite locations. Italy, however, was an inescapable pole of attraction for most of them. Florence, Venice and Rome had been at the heart of the Grand tour for centuries and had become legendary for all those eager to study the art of the past, quite apart from their appeal in terms of the climate, the countryside, the people, and the overall atmosphere prevailing in them. »

« My dissertation is a scholarly edition: Selected Letters of Vernon Lee (1856-1935). It includes approximately 280 letters written between the years 1870 and 1933—correspondence to her family as well as various friends and colleagues.
I transcribed all the letters from manuscript: most of them from the Vernon Lee archive at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, and from archives I visited in Florence, her home for most of her life. The remainder are transcribed from reproductions ordered from archives in the United States and England. I selected letters pertinent to Lee’s professional life as a critic and fiction writer—those that discuss her books, research, and the experiences that influenced her work. I did not include letters of only a personal nature.
The order of the letters is chronological, with headnotes that give biographical and cultural contexts. The transcriptions retain Lee’s abbreviations, paragraph breaks, and punctuation. Silent corrections were made to misspellings, slips of the pen and the occasional missing word. The footnotes document deleting of words and phrases and similar slips of the pen such as words that were incorrectly begun, crossed out, and then written correctly will be silently corrected. More significant revisions will be noted. If it is a significant misspelling, such as a person’s name, I retain it and provide a footnote of explanation. »
