La muñeca y otros textos espectrales (The Doll and Other Spectral Texts), compiled and translated by Betina González, published by FERA

Dressed in the yellow of The Yellow Book, this first Argentine collection of Vernon Lee’s writing was carefully selected, translated and annotated by the novelist Betina González. The anthology includes translations of “The Doll”, “A Wicked Voice”, “Ravenna and Her Ghosts” and “Faustus and Helena: Notes on the Supernatural in Art”, prefaced by González’s essay “In the Spirit of Vernon Lee” (“En el espíritu de Vernon Lee”). The essay takes its title from none other than Borges, who insisted that the style manual he was planning to write with Adolfo Bioy Casares and Silvina Ocampo should be composed “en el espíritu de Vernon Lee”.

A special edition of La muñeca also features González’s highlights, marginal notes, and a reading guide to each piece, something Lee herself would surely have valued. The book is further enriched by the artist Ro Martez’s wonderfully haunting illustrations.

The anthology is available here, and the preface can be read in its entirety here. To learn more about the book, and about González’s fascination with Lee’s cultural ghosts and the role of space in the supernatural, watch this interview with her (automatically translated English subtitles are available).
